Identifying CO2 storage options for stranded emitters
In 2022 the UK held its first open competitive licensing round for CCS. Interested companies had to make submissions that considered the full value chain, from emitters to storage, demonstrating technical and commercial excellence.
Client Need:
A client with expertise in CCS from outside the UK wanted to make a submission. They were seeking support from specialists who understood the regulator expectations and who could bring local knowledge of the CCS frameworks in place in the UK.
Description of services provided by ERCE staff:
ERCE conducted a regional evaluation of the surrounding area to assess the potential for carbon storage. This evaluation was followed by detailed static and simulation modelling of the site and storage complex to demonstrate storable quantities of CO2, plume and pressure movement, and containment. We undertook a detailed assessment of legacy wells in the area. In addition, our work included assessment of topsides and facilities to demonstrate potential for re-use of infrastructure. Finally, we integrated our analysis of potential emitters, including domestic and international (shipping), with cost and economic modelling for different development scenarios.
Outcome:
Submission made and client bid on acreage based on our recommendations.
