Independent Review of an Early Risk Assessment for Submission to Regulators
Understanding technical risks and developing appropriate Monitoring and Corrective Measures plans are a critical part of any CCS development. The UK NSTA has defined milestones in their storage license application, to ensure applicants are developing a robust risk system.
Client Need:
A storage licensee required an external technical expert to review their Early Risk Assessment report relating to their carbon storage licence in the UK North Sea.
Description of services provided by ERCE staff:
ERCE’s multidisciplinary team reviewed the client’s risk assessment process, quality of the documentation, the uncertainties and biases in the dataset, the subsurface risks and the associated consequence and likelihood and appropriateness of mitigations and any relevant risks the client had omitted. We presented a high-level summary of our findings to the regulator during a workshop. We also prepared a detailed technical report of our findings for the regulator and the client team. The work included a technical review of subsurface risks as well as a risk management process review.
Outcome:
Our findings have been incorporated into the future activities our client as they progress through the regulatory process. We were complimented in our approach by the NSTA.
We received the following feedback from the client: “The ERCE team displayed a high level of professionalism in supporting an unusual piece of work for a carbon sequestration project. In a very short time frame they completed a very thorough piece of diligence and technical work and supported Company requests as they arose in a timely and professional manner.”
